It may be easier than you think!
The main effort must be to reform our campaign financing system. We need to take the money out of the equation!
We all know that lobbyists and other influential parties put money into the pockets (PACS) of our politicians and then expect a "return on their investment"! They "sell their souls to the company store"!!
In politics it takes, not only a "thick skin", but "lots of $$$$". Well, that's what's wrong!!
Why can't we have qualified candidates run for office without requiring "small fortunes"?? Well, we can!!
We have ever-expanding media sources including TV/Cable, Radio, Print, Internet, etc. which can and should be utilized to provide EQUAL coverage to each of every qualified (registered) candidate for office at NO COST. This can be done on local, regional and national levels as appropriate. The media never loses since they can be allowed to sell advertising to the coverage. There is really no need to "kiss babies", sell $5,000 plate "dinners", shake hands, or any of that PHONY, time-consuming pointless "campaigning"! Accepting money from lobbyists or any such sources should be made illegal....period!! All the issues, positions and debates can be covered on open....equal time for ALL registered/qualified candidates.......starting with local Town Halls, like we are seeing now.......on up to the district, regional and national levels without requiring $$$$.
A secondary, but equally important, effort must be made in Education and Voter Reform as well.
Voter reform must take the form of requiring a simple & basic but necessary "Voter eligibility test". Yes, just like we require one to take a driver's test before being allowed to drive on the public roads.......we need to do the same before allowing a person the "equally important" priviledge of voting! Not only to ensure proper age, residency and similar requirements.....but for "education"! One should have the basic understanding of what is involved in the voting process. We give very similar tests now to immigrants when receiving their citizenship. It is simply not enough to expect one to have "responsibilty" just because they are a "resident". Finally, voting reform will require an accurate ("non-Acorn-style") method of registering and identifying all eligible voters.....AND a unified, coordinated method of "counting" votes to include a universal (user-friendly) voting machine system.
Along with voter reform, we need to finish up with the full-scale Education reform we so desparately need. Each year our youth in succeeding generations fall farther behind our global neighbors. I am a strong advocate of a national "Voucher System" which would give each school-age child a voucher to be used at a qualified & certified school of their choice. I believe a "free marketplace" approach to our schools will return the competiveness required for our schools to once again "compete" on a national and global level. The inferior schools will fail and inevitably be forced to close. So be it! The good ones will flourish.
With no $$$ requirements for politicians; an improved and accurate voting system; and an informed, educated electorate......we may have a way to save this country from the direction it is going.
Our only dilemma, is how do we get corrupt politicans to pass the needed reforms and "cut their own throats"???
